Description

The Commercial Banking First Line Risk Manager (associate), will act as the lead risk manager for the Commercial Banking First Line of Defense Risk Team to cover the Commercial Banking Lower Middle Market department, working directly with department heads to provide the business with first line risk management coverage.  In this role, the risk manager will be the departments main contact for any risk related concerns.  As lead risk manager for the Lower Middle Market space, the position will require coverage of the departments Issue Management, Exam Management, Risk & Control Self-Assessments and the Material Risk Program, to name a few, and the development of strong ties with business heads, second line risk, and other embedded risk managers covering other areas of the Commercial Bank.  

Responsibility Statement -

  • Implements or enhances routines to re-enforce positive risk culture through all levels of the organization including first line identification, escalation and management of risks, timely execution of customer remediations and behaviors that make for a strong control environment
  • Provides analysis, development and design of the Commercial Banking Risk Control Self-Assessments (RCSA) on a BAU & scheduled refresh basis, including; identification of risks/controls, process walkthroughs, process mapping, process inventory update & prioritization, control design assessment & liaison between control testing and the business and administration of the risk and control inventory in the system of record.
  • Strengthens the first line operational risk control environment by demonstrating improvements in key metrics.
  • Works with the business to understand the controls currently in place to minimize risk, including Underwriting/Portfolio Management, Relationship Management and Client Service & Support/Middle Office.
  • Interprets regulations in conjunction with first line compliance affecting control standards with large degree of independence and suggests methods of updating policies and practices to address any risk concerns.
  • Manages complex projects that involve working with businesses to improve controls to mitigate any deficiencies and incorporate any improvements in the control environment into the RCSA.
  • Identifies & creates issues and corrective action plans with the business that arise through risk programs, BAU or audits/exams, then drives remediation to completion through execution of the corrective action plans, ensuring timely closure demonstrated by validation/sustainability testing.
  • Keeps past due issue below thresholds.
  • Facilitates Internal Audit, Credit Risk Review, Control Testing Unit, External Regulator, Quality Assurance exams/reviews on behalf of the business as necessary and monitors trends, while managing issues arising and determining corrective action plans in conjunction with the business, as necessary.
  • Contributes towards the achievement of positive exam results through exam management skills.
  • Applies developing knowledge and supports the design and assessment for BAU quality control or RCSA control testing & assurance programs.
  • Independently reviews control testing & quality control results to ensure the accuracy of findings and follow up with the business to ensure that corrective action is reinforced by management communication and/or issues created and remediated.
  • Reviews current policies and procedures to identify process gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develops or facilitates procedures / job-aids concerning business processes, controls, and risk management to align with risk programs, address gaps and to complete corrective action plans.
  • Completes Risk Assessments on behalf of the business supporting New Product & Business practices, also serving as an operational and governance subject matter expert. 
  • Incorporates new controls and automation of existing controls into the RCSA as a result of systems implementation initiatives and enhancements.
  • Performs periodic Material Risk updates and refresh.
  • Supports the build out of all risk programs across Commercial Banking
  • Partners with Internal Audit, Credit Risk Review, Compliance, Second Line Credit Risk, Operations Management, other Lines of Business and Businesses to share information and escalate issues as needed.
  • Updates KRI data on periodic basis to determine values and evaluate in relation to triggers and limits.
  • Provides thematic analysis of issues for business to identify emerging trends.
  • Reviews and monitors controls and procedures associated with products, services, customers, and operations.
  • Embeds Customer centricity mindset in first line risk, with focus on preventing, identifying and escalating customer harm and risk/control program impacts to customer experience.

Qualifications

  • Education -  Bachelor's Degree; Accounting, Business, Statistics, Risk Management, Information Systems, Finance, Economics, or equivalent field., Master's Degree; Accounting, Business, Statistics, Risk Management, Information Systems, Finance, Economics, or equivalent field., or equivalent work experience.
  • Work Experience - 5-9 years; Risk Management, Internal Controls, Auditing, Credit Management, Underwriting, Banking, Commercial Banking, lending related experience and/or legal or regulatory experience as applicable.
  • License/certifications - Risk Certification
  • Skills and abilities - Ability to build credibility with, collaborate with, and influence line of business executives.
  • Ability to build internal and external networks of information resources within the risk management ecosystem.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external service providers to establish resource requirements, scheduling, assignments, and service levels.
  • Ability to constructively work both independently and in collaborative environments involving all levels of management and employees.
  • Advanced understanding of the regulatory environment and how the risks of the products and services the bank offers are viewed by the Second Line of Defense and regulators.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and/or leading risk projects across multiple constituencies or lines of business where necessary, offering varied loan products and services.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and complex problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the financial services sector and banking, particularly within commercial banking, lending, and risk management or equivalent.
  • Strong project management skills, understanding of BSA/AML and OFAC regulations, regulatory expectations, and industry leading practices.
  • Physical demands - Minimal physical effort such as sitting, standing, and walking.
